Dark Game (DI Kelly Porter #1) by Rachel Lynch

Kelly’s gut turned over as she realised the danger she was in. She heard no sirens. She knew that she was simply collateral. To these men who made a lot of money from the suffering of others, they’d have no problem snuffing her out.

After a scandal forces D. I. Kelly Porter out of the Met, she returns to her home turf in the Lake District. Crimes in the Cumbrian constabulary tend to be of the minor sort, but Kelly begins work on a cold case that shocked the local community – the abduction and brutal murder of ten-year-old Lottie Davies.

Meanwhile, Kelly is also investigating two seemingly straightforward crimes: a case involving an illegal immigrant, and a robbery following the death of local businessman Colin Day. But evidence comes to light that reveals a web of criminal activity beyond anything Kelly imagined. Behind the veneer of sleepy, touristy towns lies a dark and dangerous underworld. As Kelly threatens to expose those with much to lose, she risks paying the ultimate price to get to the truth….

I would like to thank the author Rachel Lynch, Netgalley and Canelo.

DI Kelly Porter has come home from London to the Lake District. She takes on a cold case and then she gets another case to do with people trafficking, illegal immigrants and a prominent local businessman who died? What are they all hiding and who is behind this terrible murder of a 10 year old little girl. You have GOT to read this author's 1st book in a series that looks to be really good.

I read this within 24 hours. I couldn't put it down. It had me engrossed from beginning to end.

Once Upon a Lie (Maeve Conlon #1) by Maggie Barbieri

Maeve Conlon's life is coming apart at the seams. Her bakery is barely making ends meet, and one of her daughters spends as much time grounded as the other does studying. Her ex-husband has a new wife, a new baby, and a look of pity for Maeve that's absolutely infuriating. Her father insists he's still independent, but he's slowly and obviously succumbing to Alzheimer's. And now, her cousin Sean Donovan has been found dead, sitting in his car in a public park, shot through the head.

There was never much love lost between Maeve and Sean and she's not exactly devastated by his death, but suddenly the police are poking around asking the family questions. It's just one more hassle Maeve doesn't have time for, until she realizes that her father, whose memory and judgment are unreliable at best, is a suspect in the murder. Maeve is determined to clear his name, but is she prepared to cope with the dark memories and long-hidden secrets that doing so might dredge up?

Maggie Barbieri will mesmerize readers with Once Upon a Lie, a gripping novel about family, justice, and the choices we make that define who we are.

I would like to Maggie Barbieri for writing this story. It was absolutely mesmerizing and made me listen/read to the end.

I've been mesmerized in reading about the way a woman who's got a lot on her plate (her dad has dementia, 1 of her daughter's is going off the rails, her ex husband isn't listening to her and her bakery is looking like it's going down hill). Her cousin has been shot in the head in a public car park. Who shot him, why are the police blaming Maeve's dad? Did he kill his own nephew or is he is being framed for a murder he didn't do?

You need to read this compelling and psychological murder story and see what happened to Sean Donovan.

Jackson by Tracie Podger

Jackson
“It’s time to get my shit together. Time to tell her that I love her. Time to right wrongs and put the past behind me. But I have an addiction, one that haunts me, that takes over my body and mind. One that leaves scars.”
Summer
“It’s time to get my shit together. Time to tell him that I love him. Time to move on from my past. But he has an addiction, one that scares me, one that I don’t feel capable of dealing with.”

Jackson - Son of a wealthy, abusive man finds peace in art. Whether that art be on his body or walls, it gives him an outlet.
Summer – A woman in mourning, finds peace in the arms of her friend.
Together they can fight their demons, they can put the past behind them – or can they?
Can two broken people have the love they both desire? Or will dangerous, harmful outlets and loss forever consume them?

Jackson is a standalone with The Passion Series.

Angsty romance for over 18’s. This novel contains scenes that could be a trigger for some. Please feel free to contact the author or refer to the Trigger Warning section on the author’s website – www.TraciePodger.com

I would like to thank Tracie Podger & TBC for allowing me to read this new book of hers.

When I started to read this, I wasn't sure what the storyline was about. But as I carried on reading, it became obvious of Jackson's character and how much pain he was in. Summer is in pain for a different reason but what they both need is each other. Read if Summer and Jackson can overcome their problems and if they can co-exist with each other or are they forever doomed to never be together.

Can't wait to see if Tracie Podger will write the Passion series and if she'll do other books from the other characters in this series.

NOT AGAIN (Standalone sequel to 'Moment of Impact') by Rene D. Schultz

Austin is struggling with the death of his fiancĂ©. Kelzi lost her husband to the war in Iraq and is destitute, withdrawn and living in a shelter with her four-year-old son. They are both traveling down the road of self-destruction, until ‘fate' and 'letting go of the past’ collide. Will Austin be able to let go of his past? Will Kelzi learn to trust again?

A riveting exploration of love lost and found. NOT AGAIN is the poignant story of a young man who must confront his past, so that he can believe in the chance for a new beginning.

I've been reading this author's books for many years and they still get me in the heart. A great read and sopping tissues during the book.

This I think is best to be read after reading Moment of Impact (to give you an insight to Austin's past about Harper and how he has digested the horror in him losing her).

Kelzi has lost her husband, her home and most of all her life as she knew it. She has a gorgeous little boy who is the light of her life. Without him, her life isn't worth living. One Thursday Kelzi and Austin meet at a group therapy and where their lives entwine from that moment anything can happen.

I loved this book as it showed what human compassion and honesty does for group therapy and if 2 strangers can help heal each other.

Only The Innocent - Rachel Abbott

An Amazon Number One Bestseller

A man is dead. The killer is a woman. But what secrets lie beneath the surface - so dark that a man has to die?

Women are rarely cold blooded killers. But when famous philanthropist Hugo Fletcher is found dead, there is no doubt in anybody's mind that the killer is a woman. And it is clear from the precision of the planning that this was no crime of passion. It was an execution.

The victim was revered the world over for his charitable work with trafficked Eastern European prostitutes, and as at least one of these girls is missing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is certain that there has to be a connection.

But nothing is as it appears on the surface. A web of complex relationships is gradually revealed and it seems that everybody has something to hide. As each horrific secret is exposed, Tom Douglas begins to realise that this is much more than a simple murder case. And he has a terrible dilemma to face - whether to punish the guilty, or protect the innocent.

I've had this book on my kindle for nearly 6 years. I've heard great things of this author, so started this book.

OMG the storyline is compelling and knowing it goes on behind closed doors still. Who killed Hugo Fletcher? What has the prostitutes got to do with his murder? All will be revealed in Only The Innocent.

But when Savvy’s estranged mother crashes back into her life, her newfound happiness is under threat… will Savvy have the courage to pursue her dreams?

I was offered to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

This started off really good with how Savannah Curtis was left with her aunt as her mother was this big singing star who dumped her when she was 7 years old, she's about to walk out on a man who's taken 10 years of her life. Has a job she loves, but just stays in the background.

What happens when she meets a bartender who mixes these drinks and she starts feeling her life could be more. What happens when her mother wants to come into her life after 20 years. Find out what happens between Savannah, Clare aka Persphone Black and Milo (the bartender) in this exciting 1st series of Martini Club.
