Black Wood by S.J.I. Holliday

He spots the two girls through the cracked screen of beech, sycamore and leg-scratching gorse: a flash of red skirt and a unison of giggles . . . The smaller girl sees him first and she lets out a strange little squeak and jumps back, grabbing onto the other girl’s T-shirt, revealing a flash of milky white shoulder.
He grins.

Something happened to Claire and Jo in Black Wood: something that left Claire paralysed and Jo with deep mental scars. But with Claire suffering memory loss and no evidence to be found, nobody believes Jo’s story.

Twenty-three years later, a familiar face walks into the bookshop where Jo works, dredging up painful memories and rekindling her desire for vengeance. And at the same time, Sergeant David Gray is investigating a balaclava-clad man who is attacking women on a disused railway, shocking the sleepy village of Banktoun. But what is the connection between Jo’s visitor and the masked man?

To catch the assailant, and to give Jo her long-awaited justice, Gray must unravel a tangled web of past secrets, broken friendship and tainted love. But can he crack the case before Jo finds herself with blood on her hands?

I bought this book last month and it was chosen for a book group BOTM read.
Well, what can I say about this book. It was gripping at parts for me, was slow at the start like others have suggested due to getting to know the characters. I guessed a few things about the plot and the characters, but all in all I enjoyed bits.
I was kinda happy that it ended the way it did and wonder as it's been left on a cliff hanger, will SJI Holliday do a follow up to the story or has she left the cliff hanger on purpose lol.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

A debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

A compulsively readable, emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller that draws comparisons to Gone GirlThe Silent Wife, or Before I Go to Sleep, this is an electrifying debut embraced by readers across markets and categories.

I was given a copy of this for review via Netgalley and the publishers.

I found this to be tedious at times and damn right boring characters for my own personal opinion. I didn't connect with the characters and found that going between the 3 main female characters was quite disturbing (which I can understand is the idea), but to me they wasn't that believable.

I am sorry if anyone liked/loved the book, but for me, it wasn't as believable as I was hoping after the hype and the way this was compared to Gone Girl (which I've never read).

Just What Kind of Mother Are You? by Paula Daly

What if your best friend's child disappears? On your watch? What would you do? This is exactly what happens to Lisa Kallisto one freezing December in the English Lakes. Her whole world descends into the stuff of nightmares. Because, not only is 13-year-old Lucinda missing, and not only is it all Lisa's fault, but she's the second teenage girl to disappear within a fortnight. And the first one turned up stripped bare, after suffering from a terrifying ordeal.

Wracked with guilt over her mistake, and after being publicly blamed by Lucinda's family, Lisa sets out to right the wrong. But as she begins peeling away the layers surrounding Lucinda's disappearance, Lisa learns that all is not as it first appears to be.

I would like to thank the publishers and Netgalley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for a review.

There is a weird man up on the moors like area. Who is he? What is he doing up there? What has Guy Riverty been up to? Who is snatching these girls? What has Lisa Kallisto got to do with this?

This was a very riveting read. Had me on the edge of seat wanting to know who the culprit is and what makes him do what he is doing to these girls. Why use a dog to lure these girls? Everything is shocking between families and you find out things that are shocking too.

Interconnected Hearts (Connected #3) by Bethany Daniel

This is book three in the Connected series, it starts after the Epilogue of Disconnected.

Other books in the Connected series:
Reconnected
Disconnected

You met and fell in love with Krista and Scott as their love grew along side the rekindled love of their best friends, Liam and Katy, and now you get to watch their love bloom.

Krista Quinn-Adams is a tough chick, and the center of her husband's, movie star Scott Adams, world. In the short time they have been together they have already had to deal with a crazy actress that tried to take out their friend Katy and almost took down Krista while she was at it, and the paparazzi following them around every corner, and now they are adjusting to the real world. Krista has an everyday job as a counselor at a high end high school in Los Angeles doing what she does best, and Scott is busy filming his newest movie with a young up and coming actress, Zoie Reese.

A phone call from the head of Excite Entertainment, Mitchell Fallon, makes their jobs collide. Krista brings her expertise to the table trying to help the young actress who has been labeled trouble both by the media and Excite, out of the dark place she's in and out on the better end of the Hollywood mad house. But is Zoie Reese a little more than Krista can handle?

Get all caught up with Krista and Scott and follow them through their first red carpet together, the highs and lows of Hollywood, and the continued fight against the L.A stereotype to keep their hearts forever, interconnected.

I would like to thank the author for giving me a heads up of this book.

I was excited to read/listen to this story. I was wondering where this story would go with Krista and Scott's POVs. We also meet Braden Warren who is Liam's little brother and Zoie Reese who has problems with her parents and the memory of her brother. How these 2 get together will be interesting.

You get scandal with teenagers in the limelight, normal life away from the cameras, scandal with a love child  and a happy ending. I liked the way the story ended up going and the way Krista is the main focus at times of a woman with her head screwed on right in a world of celebrities. It was lovely to read about Scott's past and how the future looks for Mr and Mrs Adams. Looking forward to reading more from the lovely Ms Daniel.

Disconnected (Connected #2) by Bethany Daniel

A Fast Paced Love Story!

Liam and Katy were high school sweethearts. Shortly after they graduated they ran off to Vegas to get married. Liam does theater acting and it's there that he is discovered by Excite Entertainment and flown to L.A.

Once he's in L.A his marriage takes the backseat to rubbing elbows with Hollywood's biggest and brightest. One night Liam throws a big party and Katy comes into their house filled with half dressed women. When Katy says she's going to leave, Liam doesn't believe her until he comes home from filming and finds a note that tears him apart.

Four years later, he's tried to move on but never let go of the love he has in his heart for his Katy. It's in a little town they are filming in that their paths cross again and Liam has to try and convince Katy that their love is worth fighting for.

I would like to thank the author for giving me an audio copy of this book.

After reading other people's opinions, I was excited to read/listen to the story. I was wondering where the story was going with Katy leaving Liam and then Liam finding her again. But this is from Liam's POV.

You get obesession with stars, murder, love and a happy ending. I liked the way the story ended up going and the reconnection between the main characters. It was lovely to listen/read about Scott's feelings for Krista as well as Liam's feelings for Katy. Looking forward to listening to the next in the series.

Riding Steele: Aftershock (Riding Steele #6) by Opal Carew

Being kidnapped by bikers is a harrowing experience, but for some reason, Laurie doesn’t feel as terrified as she should.  The leader’s steely eyes soften when he looks at her, and the others in his gang clearly know she’s hands off.  But does that include Steele’s hands?  Her brain resists him, but her body insists she wants those big hands all over her.

Steele doesn’t know how he wound up in this mess–with a kidnapped woman on his hands and the police hot on their trail.  Now he and Laurie are in hiding at an isolated cabin, and Steele has to figure out how to extricate himself…and steer clear of his accidental captive whose tight, slinky clubbing attire is making him think all kinds of dangerous thoughts…

I would like to thank the Publishers and Netgalley for letting me read this wonderful series of installments.

This is the final installment for the Riding Steele series. I loved that Steele claimed Laurie as his woman earlier on and that Donovan got his comeuppance in the end. Raven was a beauty and a great friend to Laurie. The rest of the bikers were immensely sexy and what we all look for in a man. The sex was immense which is why the author made the reader believe that could happen to anyone (Good or Bad).

Does Laurie agree to leave all her old life behind to be with Steele and the Gang? Did Steele really kill Donovan or was it someone else? Does Steele have feelings for Laurie or not? YOU have to read the book to find out all the answers.

Riding Steele: Crossroads (Riding Steele #5) by Opal Carew

This is making me frustrated. The slimball Donovan is horrid, wicked and downright arrogant. Steele is the complete opposite, loving, caring, willing to share ;) and with the biker group behind him always protective. Laurie gets to hand back the Diamond necklace without any police bother, but what happens next will make you feel sick. 2 other slimeballs kidnap her and take her to the NUMBER 1 slimeball. What is that slimeball Donovan really up to? BDSM at it's finest with some hatred for a certain character.

Read this installment to find out what a complete slimball Donovan is and then rush to read the next to hear if the police are hot on their tail - that's what I am off to do.

This is making me nervous in the sense I want to find out what is happening to Steele. What is he hiding from Laurie? The experiences Laurie has just had are mind blowing, a woman's dream come true when you read what Laurie gets up to. Can Laurie let her hair down and be with Steele or will she walk away? Steele has the Diamond necklace or does he? What is that slimeball Donovan really up to?

Read this installment and then rush to read the next - that's what I am off to do.

We get to know a bit more about Laurie and what sort of life Donovan has made her do. She wants to touch and feel what Steele, but she is too scared after what her slimy ex boyfriend has done and has flashbacks. Will she finally let Steele in or will she burn her only comfort? Only way to find out is to read the 3rd installment.

I was asked to review this from netgalley and I would like to thank the publishers for a copy as well.

WOW, OMG, what can I say to the start of this new series to me. It has everything that Hard to Ride had and more. This is before Hard to Ride was written (sorry it took me so long to read it lol). But meeting Laurie, Steele, creep Donovan and the rest of the Biker gang is a great way. Can't wait to read the next installment.

Forbidden Mind (The Forbidden Trilogy #1) by Karpov Kinrade

An award-winning series from the USA Today bestselling author Karpov Kinrade.

She reads minds.
He controls minds.
Together, they might get out alive.

She reads minds. He controls minds. Together, they might get out alive.

I've seen into the minds of killers and have crawled into the darkest mental corners of humanity, but even I wasn’t prepared for this.

I thought that when I turned 18 I would be released from my secret school of paranormal spies and free to follow my dreams and make my own life. That's what we all thought. Until I met Drake.

Everything changed when I linked minds with the blond-haired boy strapped to that gurney. In my wildest dreams I couldn't have imagined the dangerous truth behind my life.

And now time is running out. We must work together to save ourselves and everyone we love. Before it's too late.

I couldn't get past the font problem. I am also having trouble trying to get into the story. So I won't be continuing with this book. I am sorry for those who enjoyed the book, but it's not for me :(

Is the wedding to go ahead or will there be hiccups along the way? What has Jason Stone and Danika Perconti got up their sleeves for the Perconti empire? I had some hatred for Leo in this installment due to his passion for possessions. He seems to think Karin is his for the taking when she has her own mind. I feel sorry for Leo on the other hand as he is the patriarch of the family since his father passed away.

I think he ought to tell Karin a few more things about himself, but I also think Karin ought to tell him about her past or does he already know???? There is a wedding, there is controversy throughout the whole book, but what secrets does Danika have over Leo and how will it effect Karin in their relationship?

All will be revealed when you read the 3rd installment of At His Service.

Etta and Otto and Russel and James by Emma Hooper

A gorgeous literary debut about an elderly woman’s last great adventure walking across Canada. A beautiful novel of pilgrimage, of fulfilling lifelong promises, of a talking coyote called James, of unlikely heroes and hundreds of papier-mâché animals…

Eighty-two-year-old Etta has never seen the ocean. So early one morning she takes a rifle, some chocolate, and her best boots, and begins walking the 3,232 kilometers from rural Canada eastward to the coast.

Her husband Otto wakes to a note left on the kitchen table. I will try to remember to come back, Etta writes to him. Otto has seen the ocean, having crossed the Atlantic years ago to fight in a far-away war. He understands. But with Etta gone, the memories come crowding in and Otto struggles to keep them at bay.

Russell has spent his whole life trying to keep up with Otto and loving Etta from afar. Russell insists on finding Etta, wherever she’s gone. Leaving his own farm will be the first act of defiance in his life.

As Etta walks further toward the ocean, accompanied by a coyote named James, the lines among memory, illusion, and reality blur. Rocking back and forth with the pull of the waves, Etta and Otto and Russell and James moves from the hot and dry present of a quiet Canadian farm to a dusty burnt past of hunger, war, passion, and hope; from trying to remember to trying to forget; and inspires each of its characters to visit the sites they’ve longed to see and say the things they’ve longed to say. This is dazzling literary fiction about the rediscovery and care of the soul, and the idea it’s never too late for a great adventure.

I was given a copy of this wonderful book. I would like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for letting me read this.

I wasn't able to get into the book unfortunately. I couldn't warm to the characters and get a feel for their places in the book. I apologise to anyone who does or did love/like this book. I feel at the moment, it's not making me like the storyline neither.

I received a copy of the insatiable book from Netgalley and publishers. I've never read a Suzanne Rock book before I read this series.

It starts off really good with the build up to the characters identities. Who is who in the hotel business and what sparks will go when Karin Norell meets Leo Perconti. The sex is amazing with BDSM added in slightly, nothing too over the top.

What will happen between them after the night before? What are the reporters going to put in the tabloids? All will be revealed in the next installment.

Hard Ride #3: A Novel in Three Parts by Opal Carew

Liv never expected to rekindle her romance with her college boyfriend, who's now a hard-bodied, tattooed biker. And she never imagined sharing herself with his entire gang.

Shock can feel Liv pulling away from him, just like she did all those years ago. Her lies are a painful reminder that she's not ready for anything more than a good time in bed, but he's not willing to let her go. He lost her once, and it's never happening again. Faced with losing the one thing he's always wanted, he must prove to Liv that what they have is more than physical and that his heart is in her hands. But is she ready to give him hers?

This is part three of HARD RIDE, a three part novel.

I was given a copy of this wonderful book from Netgalley and the publishers.

What can I say about the final installment in this intense book. Well I LOVED Liv and Shock to pieces. I loved the sexual chemistry between them and the way they were with each other. What happens when other people get involved in their business is an explosion. You have to read the whole 3 installments to get the immense trip out from this wonderful experience.

Will definitely be reading more of Opal Carew in the future.

Hard Ride #2: A Novel in Three Parts by Opal Carew

Liv never expected to find herself trapped in an alley facing a band of rough bikers. And she certainly never expected to see him again...

When Shock encounters an old flame in a dark alley, it sends him spiraling. She's still as beautiful as ever, but she seems to have fallen on hard times since college, and he's concerned about the risks she seems to take. In order to keep her safe and finally have her for himself, he makes a sensual deal: his help for her complete submission. But will Liv be able to let go of the past and fall for the hard rider?

I was given a copy of this magnificent book from Netgalley and the publishers.

It carries on where book 1 left off with Shock and Liv. They are getting to know each other and are falling for each other. BUT neither will admit it to the other. Liv finds out things about herself she never knew and Shock is helping her to discover things.

All is going well til Liv meets Amy. A woman who works at Shock's Lawyers and tells Liv something. Also Liv gets some devasting news near the end of the book. What happens between Shock and Liv will be revealed in the next installment. Will Liv and Shock get together or will they go their separate ways.

I was given a copy of this from Netgalley and the publishers.

WOW, what a intense 1st installment of the 3 parts to this series. I was drawn in by the bikers and the style of writing. I have a thing for Erotic fiction and Opal Carew just brings it to the table.

I LOVED Liv and Shock. The way they jelled and has that love/hate relationship at the beginning. What I wanna know is WHY is Shock pushing Liv away after all these years, all will be revealed in the next installment of this immense and erotic tale.
